Technicolour Oldies

After basing my dissertation on seaside holiday aesthetics, it seems only right to put that research to good use, studying the o.a.p community of Brighton. If we are shaped by our environment and hence we shape it, why shouldn't the oldies be as rainbow bright as the stick of rocks and deckchairs they share their pier with...

Sketchbook

Playing with some amazing portraits and 1950's TV guides i bought from the Greenwich Junk Emporium last year, feels like such a shame to cut them up, but you just cant find images with such character and wit online...

Oh i do like to be beside the seaside...

Had the pleasure of visiting Peter Quinell's jampacked studio on Hastings beach , made me feel much better about the amount of collage and found ephemera i hoard!
A true British eccentric, his mixed media collage art has made its way out of the beach hut and into Harvey Nicks, Wonderland magazine, and many a festival.
I'm in love with the nostalgia and layers of colour in his work. Definately time to get back into some collage again, if only i had the same view to work in front of!

Nice dungarees.

HASTINGS

Spent all day in Hastings, joint organised by Martin O'neill of Cut It Out studio. Exploring junkshops galore! eating fish and chips, and having a pint with some amazing fellow designers...

Chris Watson showed us how his comic book style sketchbooks full of motorcycling references have developed into book covers and clothes design.
Gary Neill's signature"strong simple ideas" and great quality paper demonstrated how beautiful editorial design can be, when given the right attention and paper!
Whilst my favourite, Scott Garrett's whimsical character design and typography raised some smiles, even if some ended up a bit guiness stained!

Finally Tim Marrs, demonstrated how despite his digital collage style being much imitated, keeping an edge with impressive collaborations can keep you on top. Winning design and advertising awards for his illustrations for a 3-d Audi commercial.

Thanks guys!

Neighbourhoods

Not so happy with this, but hey ho! first attempt!
What i loved about Oslo's streets was how the vivid yellows and reds cut through the sheer vastness of landscape, hence i think i prefer the earlier stages of this painting, where shape and space are more simplistic, and some of the wood background still shows through. Unless i paint much bigger, the scene becomes to cramped to achieve any decent detail.
